Memoir Review

You’ve written something that matters.

But at some point, most memoirs reach a stage where something feels off.

Not obviously wrong.
But not working as it should.

When Writing Alone Stops Working

You may notice:

  • sections that feel slow or repetitive
  • moments that should land—but don’t
  • chapters that drift without a clear sense of shape
  • a general feeling that the writing could be better, but you can’t see how

This is not a lack of ability.

It’s what happens when you’re too close to your own material.

What I Do

I review your memoir as a reader who has no prior knowledge of your story.

That allows me to see:

  • where clarity is lost
  • where structure weakens
  • where repetition builds
  • where important moments don’t fully come through

I don’t rewrite your work.

I show you what is happening on the page—and why.

What You Receive

You’ll get a clear, structured review of your extract, including:

  • where the writing is working well
  • where it slows or becomes unclear
  • where ideas repeat or drift
  • what is affecting readability

All feedback is specific to your writing—not generic advice.

Before and After (Example)

Before

we were pushed and continually swimming a length, jumping out of the pool, running (yes, running) back to the other end, diving in and swimming again.

After

she pushed us hard: swim a length, jump out, run back to the other end of the pool—yes, run—and dive in again.

What changed

  • clearer structure and rhythm
  • unnecessary wording removed
  • stronger sense of control in the sentence

The voice remains the same. However, the writing becomes easier to read.

How It Works

  1. You send a short extract (typically 1,000–2,000 words)
  2. I review it and mark where it’s working and where it isn’t
  3. You receive clear, focused feedback you can apply to the rest of your manuscript

Who This Is For

This is for you if:

  • You’ve written part (or all) of your memoir
  • You feel something isn’t quite working
  • You want clarity, not general advice
  • You want to improve the writing without losing your voice

What This Is Not

  • Not a full edit
  • Not a rewrite
  • Not a list of generic writing tips

This is a focused review to help you see what you can’t currently see.

Next Step

If you’d like me to review a section of your memoir, send a short extract, and I’ll show you exactly what’s happening on the page—and where it can be improved.
