Your Memory Is."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most memoirs don\u2019t feel disorganised because the writer lacks structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They feel disorganised because the writer is following memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And memory doesn\u2019t work the way a reader needs it to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory doesn\u2019t move in straight lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It jumps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It circles back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It lingers on certain moments and skips others entirely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You remember what felt important at the time.<br>You remember what stayed with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that doesn\u2019t mean a reader will understand why it matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/symcox.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/luboshouska-christmas-background-1204029-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"A bookshelf full of brightly coloured books. It feels accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But accuracy isn\u2019t the same as clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If something already feels slightly off, it\u2019s often because you can\u2019t see what the reader is actually experiencing \u2014 something I\u2019ve written about in more detail here:<br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/symcox.co.uk\/why-you-cant-see-the-problem-in-your-own-memoir-even-when-you-know-somethings-wrong\/\">Why You Can\u2019t See What\u2019s Not Working in Your Own Memoir<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reader doesn\u2019t have your memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They don\u2019t know who people are unless you show them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They don\u2019t know why something matters unless you make it clear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They don\u2019t know what\u2019s coming next.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when the writing follows the logic of memory, the result often feels uneven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some sections are detailed and vivid, others are rushed or thin, and connections are implied but not made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing is wrong in isolation. But it doesn\u2019t hold together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where many memoirs start to stall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not because the writing is poor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not because the story isn\u2019t strong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s because the structure is being driven by recall rather than by meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can have a complete draft and still run into this \u2014 the difference between finishing something and having something that actually reads clearly is something I explore here:<br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/symcox.co.uk\/the-difference-between-a-finished-draft-and-a-readable-memoir\/\">The Difference Between a Finished Draft and a Readable Memoir<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a finished memoir, what matters isn\u2019t what happened first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s what matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That doesn\u2019t mean inventing anything.<br>It means deciding what carries weight\u2014and shaping the writing around that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sometimes that means bringing something forward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes it means holding something back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes it means spending more time on a moment than you expected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where writing and memory part ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory records.<br>Writing shapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your memoir feels disjointed, it\u2019s worth asking a simple question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Am I following what happened, or am I shaping what matters?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the time, the answer explains the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once you can see that, the structure starts to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because you\u2019ve forced it into place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because you\u2019re no longer relying on memory to do the job that writing needs to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re at that point\u2014where something feels off but you can\u2019t see why\u2014you can send a short extract, and I\u2019ll show you what\u2019s happening on the page: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/symcox.co.uk\/work-with-me\/\">Work With Me<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most memoirs don\u2019t feel disorganised because the writer lacks structure.
