And yet the same issue keeps returning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At this stage, effort isn\u2019t the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You\u2019re working on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You care about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You\u2019re trying to improve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The problem is perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You already know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So when something isn\u2019t fully clear on the page, your mind fills in the gaps without noticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To you, it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To a reader, it doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If this is happening in your memoir, it\u2019s almost impossible to spot from the inside. At first, editing helps as you remove obvious issues, improve clarity and tighten sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But after a certain point, the returns drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You start:<\/p>\n\n\n\n It feels like progress. Unfortunately, it doesn\u2019t move the manuscript forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You\u2019re reading with full context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The reader isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That creates a gap:<\/p>\n\n\n\n And because you can\u2019t experience the text the way a reader does, you can\u2019t reliably fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most writers don\u2019t recognise this immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It shows up as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s the point where the approach needs to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are usually three options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1. Keep editing alone<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n You continue refining, hoping clarity will emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it improves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Often, it plateaus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2. Step away and come back later<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Distance helps\u2014but it doesn\u2019t remove the core problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You still know too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3. Get an outside perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is where things usually shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because for the first time, someone else is reading without your knowledge of the story<\/p>\n\n\n\n They see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n And once you can see that clearly, the work becomes much more direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This isn\u2019t about rewriting your story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s about seeing it properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because once you can see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can make precise changes that move the manuscript forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most people leave this too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They try to fix everything themselves first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the earlier you see the problem clearly, the easier it is to resolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If something in your memoir isn\u2019t working but you can\u2019t see why, send a short extract<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" At first, it feels fixable.
