Those are real problems.<\/p>\n
But over the last few years I’ve become increasingly convinced that most of them have the same underlying cause.<\/p>\n
AI is often being asked to generate an answer before the knowledge it receives is ready to use.<\/h2>\n
That discovery eventually led me to Continuous Knowledge Preparation.<\/p>\n
The Question That Changed My Thinking<\/h2>\n
For a long time I assumed that better AI would solve most of these problems.<\/p>\n
Then I noticed something.<\/p>\n
Even excellent AI produced disappointing results when the information supplied to it was:<\/p>\n
incomplete;<\/p>\n
out of date;<\/p>\n
contradictory;<\/p>\n
lacking context;<\/p>\n
missing provenance;<\/p>\n
organised around storage rather than use.<\/p>\n
The AI wasn’t necessarily failing.<\/p>\n
The preparation was.<\/p>\n
That changed the question completely.<\/p>\n
What Is Continuous Knowledge Preparation?<\/h2>\n
Continuous Knowledge Preparation is a preparation-first discipline.<\/p>\n
Instead of beginning with prompts, models or outputs, it begins with a different question.<\/p>\n
Is the knowledge ready to use?<\/h2>\n
Preparation involves much more than collecting information.<\/p>\n
It means preparing:<\/p>\n
evidence;<\/p>\n
context;<\/p>\n
provenance;<\/p>\n
relationships;<\/p>\n
recency;<\/p>\n
uncertainty;<\/p>\n
relevance.<\/p>\n
Only then does generation become genuinely dependable.<\/p>\n
The System Prepares. The Professional Judges.<\/h2>\n
This is the single most important boundary within CKP.<\/p>\n
Artificial intelligence can prepare.<\/p>\n
It can organise.<\/p>\n
It can retrieve.<\/p>\n
It can compare.<\/p>\n
It can summarise.<\/p>\n
But professional judgement remains a human responsibility.<\/p>\n
Preparation exists to support judgement.<\/p>\n
Not replace it.<\/p>\n
Why This Matters<\/h2>\n
Many discussions about AI concentrate on:<\/p>\n
better prompts;<\/p>\n
better models;<\/p>\n
larger context windows;<\/p>\n
more capable reasoning.<\/p>\n
These are all valuable.<\/p>\n
But none of them guarantee that the knowledge being used is actually suitable for the decision that follows.<\/p>\n
Preparation comes first.<\/p>\n
Generation comes afterwards.<\/p>\n
A Simple Example<\/h2>\n
Imagine asking AI:<\/p>\n
“Should we bid for this contract?”<\/p>\n
The answer depends far less upon the wording of the prompt than upon the knowledge supplied.<\/p>\n
Has the opportunity been prepared?<\/p>\n
Have previous decisions been considered?<\/p>\n
Is the information current?<\/p>\n
Is anything missing?<\/p>\n
Has contradictory evidence been resolved?<\/p>\n
Without preparation, even a sophisticated AI may produce a very convincing answer built on weak foundations.<\/p>\n
Isn’t This Just Better Prompting?<\/h2>\n
No.<\/p>\n
Prompting matters.<\/p>\n
But prompting cannot compensate for poor preparation.<\/p>\n
A beautifully written prompt cannot repair:<\/p>\n
missing evidence;<\/p>\n
outdated information;<\/p>\n
conflicting sources;<\/p>\n
absent context;<\/p>\n
unknown provenance.<\/p>\n
Preparation and prompting solve different problems.<\/p>\n
Isn’t This Just RAG?<\/h2>\n
Retrieval-Augmented Generation retrieves information.<\/p>\n
Continuous Knowledge Preparation asks another question.<\/p>\n
Is the retrieved information actually ready for this decision?<\/h2>\n
Retrieval finds.<\/p>\n
Preparation evaluates.<\/p>\n
Those are different activities.<\/p>\n
Why I’m Exploring This<\/h2>\n
For much of my career I’ve been interested in helping people make better use of information.<\/p>\n
Long before AI became part of everyday conversation, I was working with systems designed to support complex professional decisions.<\/p>\n
Artificial intelligence simply made one long-standing problem much more visible.<\/p>\n
Preparing knowledge turns out to be just as important as generating answers.<\/p>\n
Perhaps even more so.<\/p>\n

I don’t believe Continuous Knowledge Preparation is simply another AI technique.<\/p>\n
I think it’s a way of improving professional judgement in a world where information is becoming easier to generate than it is to prepare.<\/p>\n
Artificial intelligence made me notice that problem.<\/p>\n
I suspect it has been with us much longer.<\/p>\n
